Meet Lars Moston

Lars Moston Interview

We are back this month for another big one and this Friday we have invited two of Berlin's most recognised underground stars Lars Moston & Sabrina Mue.

The music couple join us for a couple of days in Brighton before headlining at the Green Door Store, tickets for which you can grab right here. It's also Sabrina's first time in the UK so let's make them both feel super welcome.

British-German DJ/producer Lars Moston from Berlin recently added some of the World’s most influential House Music labels to his already impressive discography with EPs on Berlin’s Katermukke and Bar25 imprints, Spanish giants Suara as well as Nervous Records from New York City. Amongst Lars’s previous output are releases on Stil Vor Talent, Audio Safari and No Brainer Records, run by his friend and longest collaborator Malente. Other team-ups include Teenage Mutants (Stil Vor Talent / Off), Dirty Doering & Sascha Cawa (Katermukke), Boris Dlugosch (Defected), Juliet Sikora (Kittball) and Ben Mono (Strictly Rhythm). He has remixed Purple Disco Machine, Julian Wassermann, HRRSN, Mike Mago, Himselfher, Edu Imbernon, Claus Casper, Tony Senghore, Fort Knox 5,...Lars Moston’s music regularly pops up in the all-important Beatport Top100 lists (including the recent #1 smash “Hypnosize” as well as German Club Chart #1 and Katermukke’s #1 seller “Doso”), in playlists of tastemakers such as BBC Radio One and Ibiza Global Radio, and in the DJ sets of top-flight artists such as Justin Martin and Claptone.

As a DJ, Lars Moston mixes up a unique blend of cutting edge House, ranging from Deep Disco grooves to outright bangers, time and place permitting. With his charismatic stage presence and always combining a forward- thinking track selection with dance floor functionality, Lars has raised roofs from San Francisco to Siberia with his own definition of the new sound of Berlin. Not only that, Lars also compiled a Berlin Mixtapes Episode 019 for us last year which you can find here. Also Sabrina has put together our next Berlin Mixtapes Episode 026, which you can all enjoy as of 25.11.2018 here.

I caught up with Lars to chat about Berlin and other cool projects. Here's what we chewed the fat over.

Hi Lars, how are you and what have you been up to this week?

Great, thanks! Sabrina and I were DJing in Bremen in Northern Germany last weekend. We were also on the radio there, gave a little interview and played a DJ set together on air. The last couple of days I’ve been working in the studio, hunting for new music, lots of emails and phone calls, went to a nice dinner with some musician friends, watched some football and prepared for our UK trip.

How long have you been producing and DJing?

I started when I was 14 years old, a long time ago.

What made you get into dance music?

I’ve always been fascinated by it, ever since I was a young kid.

Henning Schmitz

Where was your first gig?

School parties and a techno night at the local disco.

How would you describe your style or what would be expected from one of your typical sets?

Basically House, but I like to incorporate different styles into it. I would say it’s positive and fun, not taking itself too seriously. Usually quite bass-driven.

You are like me, half German/half British, how long have you lived in Berlin for and Germany in total?

My Dad’s side of the family is from Southampton. I grew up in Germany though, near Dortmund. I’ve been in Berlin for 11 years now.

Do you spend much time in the UK?

I’ve been over lots of times. Visiting friends and family and for DJing gigs, this is my first time playing in Brighton though.

What's the Berlin Club Scene like right now?

Quite healthy I would say. Berlin is lucky to still have clubs that are not restricted by a bunch of buzzkill laws like most other places are these days, sadly.

You have been making music with your other half Sabrina for a few years now and are part of the Berlin Club Scene. How did you meet?

We met at a party in Berlin.

Which other DJs or producers are you liking right now?

Emanuel Satie, Walker & Royce, Joeski, Rene Amesz, Justin Martin, Sasha Robotti, Enduro Disco, Kevin Knapp, Midas 104, Riva Starr, Doorly.

What are your go to labels?

Dirtybird, Katermukke, Exploited, Hot Creations, No Brainer.

You are part of our Berlin Mixtapes Series. Last year you compiled Episode 019 for us. You also just finished a guest mix for Berlin label Lauter Unfug - Tell us more about that.

I just made a remix for Nico Pusch’s track “Grace” for Lauter Unfug, hence the guest mix. That’s in there of course. It’s an hour ranging from deeper grooves to more banging stuff, I like to go on a bit of a journey in my sets.

With great releases on Katermukke, Lauter Unfug, Kittball, Bar 25 & Moonboutique just to name a few. What can we expect from you soon?

I just finished a new solo original called “Don’t Hate, Celebrate”, which will coming out on Guesthouse Berlin. And there’s going to be a new release that Sabrina and I made together as well.

Awesome stuff! Thanks for spending time with us but before you go here's a quick-fire question and answer session. Go!
