Berlin Mixtapes - NILU 058

Next up we welcome the super talented NILU AKA Nikolaj Lund to the Berlin Mixtapes Series, whose big passion for music takes him through many genres, therefore always surprising listeners with his sets.

After only a few years, Copenhagen based NILU has already rocked the biggest clubs in Denmark, such as Culture Box, and KB18. Furthermore he has started to create a fanbase outside Denmark, and this has taken him to play at Trump Room (Tokyo), Sankeys (Ibiza), Golden Gate (Berlin), Chalet Club (Berlin), White Night (Moldova), and various clubs in China. NILU also hosts major events in Copenhagen such as “The Garden”, and “Parallel”. Not only that, NILU has release on a string of Berlin labels from Zatar, Einmusika, Bar25 and Bunny Tiger just to name a few.

We caught up with NILU who has just been touring in South America.

Hi Nikolaj, how are you and what have you been up to this week?

Hello there, I appreciate the warm welcome. I've been doing well, thank you. This week has been quite exciting for me in Brazil. I've had the pleasure of playing four gigs so far, and three more are lined up before I return to chilly Denmark. It's been a great experience, and I'm grateful for the opportunity.

You have released on many of our favourite labels including Einmusika, Bunny Tiger, Bar25 and Zatar. Is there a release that has particular special memories for you?

Absolutely, I've been fortunate to collaborate with some fantastic labels, and each release holds a special place in my journey. However, if I had to pick one, it would be my first release "Fremtid," on Zatar Music. It's a cherished memory for me because Phonique believed in both me and my music. "Fremtid" translates to "future" in Danish, and I must say, the future does look promising. It was a significant milestone, and the support I received made it even more memorable.

You have had a recent release on 1st December on Phonique's label Zatar Music from Berlin. Tell us more about that.

Indeed, that's correct. I recently released a two-track EP titled "Bazaar" on Phonique's label, Zatar Music, based in Berlin. This project is particularly special to me as it serves as a love letter to my enchanting time in Jordan. It encapsulates the essence of that trip with good music, plenty of hummus, and the company of great friends. The EP features strong ethnic influences in terms of instruments and vocals, especially on the title track.

What else can you tell us about future releases, anything exciting in the pipeline?

There's some exciting stuff in the works. At the beginning of 2024, I'll be dropping another EP on Einmusika featuring two tracks. Having tested them during my Brazil tour, I can confidently say that they work well on the dancefloor. Additionally, I'm thrilled to share that I've recently signed a track to the label 'New Tab,' curated by Guzy.

Another track is set for release on 'Vudu,' a new label run by my friends in Jordan. There are a few more surprises in the pipeline, but some details are still under wraps. Stay tuned for more musical adventures!

Where was your first gig and how did it go?

Ah, the memories of my first gig are a bit hazy, but I vividly recall one of my early experiences playing electronic music. It took place at the iconic KB18 club in Denmark, a place to which I owe a great deal of gratitude. KB18 embraced diversity and provided a space for everyone, contributing significantly to my growth as a DJ and artist.

For one of my first electronic music gigs, I had the honor of warming up the crowd for an hour. The nerves were certainly there; I had prepared extensively for the moment. Fortunately, it went well, and those memories hold a special place in my heart. It's crucial to stay connected to your roots and remember where you started on this journey. KB18 played a pivotal role in shaping me, and I'll always treasure those early experiences.

You have travelled a fair bit across the world including China. Where did you play and how was that experience?

Yes, I've been fortunate to travel extensively, including a memorable visit to China a few years back. Before Covid, I had the opportunity to play in China, Japan, and Thailand, each offering a different perspective on music and party culture. Exploring and connecting with the diverse musical scenes in each country was truly fascinating.

One particular highlight was an unplanned New Year's party in Shenzhen, where I met one of my now very good friends, Thomas Guiddo, during that event. The night was filled with great vibes and memorable experiences. It's moments like these that make touring so special – not just for the music, but for the unexpected connections and cultural exchanges that enrich the journey.

The Glow Company

You play a lot in your native Copenhagen. For any newbies to Copenhagen's nightlife, where would you recommend they go?

Copenhagen's nightlife is thriving, and for newcomers, there's a vibrant scene to explore. We're currently spoiled with some fantastic electronic venues. For my style of music, I'd highly recommend checking out Culture Box, Werkstatt, Module, and Hangaren. These venues provide an excellent platform for the kind of sounds I love to share.

Beyond that, Copenhagen has a diverse range of clubs that cater to different crowds and vibes, so there's something for everyone. For those aspiring DJs or anyone new to the scene, my top recommendation is to attend various parties, immerse yourself in different vibes and genres, and most importantly, support the local crews. The best way to understand and contribute to the scene is to be an active part of it, and Copenhagen offers a welcoming and dynamic environment to do just that.

Which other DJs or producers are you liking right now?

At the moment I’m really into DJ’s like, Nico Morano, REBRN, Super Flu, Rafael Cerato, Adam Ten, Helsloot and more ;)
