Berlin Mixtapes: Meet Teenage Mutants

Thomas Schumacher

It's nearly Christmas time and as always we are set to deliver another epic Xmas bash in our 4th season. This year we welcome the awesome Teenage Mutants to Brighton, a duo we have been asked to bring to our city for a while. Not only that, our lovely resident Lola has been a huge fan for many years and is, let's just say, a little beside herself.

The duo join us at the Green Door Store on Friday 14 December, so let's make them both feel super welcome.

The worldwide clubbing scene has surrendered to Teenage Mutant’s haunting grooves, skills and a praiseworthy attitude for the last few years. Talent never falls on deaf ears, for this very reason Teenage Mutants have published great EPs on labels such as Sony Music, Ultra, Suara, Stil Vor Talent, Bunny Tiger, Hed Kandi, Incorrect, Click Records, Nervous, Kittball, Katermukke, Definition Music & Light My Fire. It is on one of these labels, Stil vor Talent, where the duo released an album at the end of 2017. Moving forward through 2018 and into 2019 we caught up with Kris & Pascal for a chat to discuss what's up next for them both. As a DJ-team, Teenage Mutants have travelled the entire world from Johannesburg to Moscow, Paris to Hollywood, Miami to Berlin, and Bangkok to Kuala Lumpur. But the duo will be never tired of gigging all over the planet; new gigs in Asia, USA, South America has seen them touring non-stop throughout 2018.

Hi guys, how are you and what have you been up to this week?

Good - Thanks! We are just back from our India Tour and back in the Studio finishing a track for the guys at Tronic and working on our Album.

How long have you been producing and DJing?

Long time…we are old! Like more than 15 years now…

What made you get into dance music?

I think both of us were already interested in Electronic Music during our school time and we were tired from the commercial radio sound everyone was into.

How did you guys meet?

It's funny..but we met at the local Burger King with some friends.

Where was your first gig?

Our first show as Teenage Mutants was in Hamburg (Baalsaal).

I'm going to ask the obvious but where did the name Teenage Mutants comes from?

Yes that is definitely the obvious. I remember we were sitting in my kitchen and thinking about names. And this came up and we are still happy and proud of it.

I have been hammering your releases for years now at our events and radio shows in particular your releases on Katermukke, Suara, Stil vor Talent, Kittball and Light My Fire. Are there any tracks you like to revive during your sets?

Yes these labels (except for Stil vor Talent) are from our Deep House period. I would not play them anymore but still like to listen to them in the car or at home.

A standout track, which has become a bit of an anthem at our parties this year is your EP with Heerhorst 'Growing' - Are there any other collabs on the horizon?

Yes a lot :) Basti (Bastian Heerhorst) has been a great friend for years and is a great producer. We are always happy if he shows us some tricks. He’s a master.

One of our residents, Lola is a super fan of yours and will also be warming up for you on the night (she is about to burst btw) but is this your first time in Brighton and how often do you get to play in the UK?

We played a lot of times in London and Manchester over the last few years.

You are currently based in Mainz, which is near Frankfurt - What's the Underground scene like in Frankfurt?

In the 90s Frankfurt was the most important City in Europe for Techno. You can still feel this history. It's a smaller scene at the moment but one of the bigger ones besides Berlin.

Which other DJs or producers are you liking right now?

What are your go to labels?

You have compiled our latest Berlin Mixtapes Series Episode 027 - Tell us more about your mix.

Just a couple of new tracks from us ;-)

What else can we expect from you soon?

2019 will start with a release on Tronic and then we will focus on our album which will be out on Stil vor Talent.

Great news, we very much look forward to it. Thanks guys for spending some time with us and we are very excited to welcoming you to Brighton. You have a big following here so I know you will be welcomed with open arms.
